Library supporters who can't get to Washington, D.C., this week for the American Library Association fly-in have other options: For the first time ALA is live streaming Monday's morning briefings. As in previous years, those at home can also participate in a virtual legislative day by contacting their congressional offices by phone, email and social media posts.
About 400 people are attending the 42nd National Library Legislative Day; priority policy issues include funding, copyright, privacy and access to government information. Former U.S. Rep. Rush Holt, now CEO of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, kicked off the event Monday.
It's a somewhat quieter week for fly-ins, as lawmakers are back in their districts, and Mother's Day is Sunday. Still, at least a dozen associations will be on Capitol Hill.
The National Rural Electric Cooperative Association will bring about 1,500 co-op leaders to visit congressional offices and also participate in regulatory meetings.
The American Hospital Association is holding its annual membership meeting this week. State delegations will visit Capitol Hill Wednesday. The American College of Physicians is holding Hill meetings Wednesday, Leadership Day, in advance of its annual Internal Medicine Meeting.
